Cumberland, England. 1507 - 1528
The Dacre Beasts are a group of heraldic figures that were commissioned by Lord Thomas Dacre, to represent the powerful Dacre family. The beasts date from some time between 1507 - 1528, although they were later repainted in 1844, after sustaining damage in a fire. They are some of the only examples of free standing large heraldic animals from the Renaissance period. Most records of heraldic animals are also royal beasts and for those of a noble northern family to survive is particularly interesting.
The animals represented are a Griffin, a Ram, a Dolphin and a Bull. Each animal holds a banner that bears the arms of a particular family that were associated with the Dacre family. The Griffin and the Dolphin both hold arms of the Greystoke family, who had married in to the Dacre family at the time the beasts were made. The Ram holds the arms of the de Multon family, who had married in to the Dacre family in the 13th Century and had led to the family gaining more lands and power. The Bull figure bears the medieval arms of the Dacre family itself.
